Being prepared to change a flat tire is one of the most important types of DIY car repair knowledge you can have. Flat tires can happen to anybody, anywhere, and it’s always an inconvenience. But if you have the knowledge and the tools, you can perform this type of Jeep® service yourself and quickly get back on the road. Here is a guide to changing a flat tire from our certified technicians at Fields Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM Asheville.
Necessary Tools
- Spare Tire: Properly inflated and in good condition
- Jack: Familiarize yourself with your SUV’s jack and its location
- Lug Wrench: Used to tighten and loosen the lug nuts
Safety First
Safety is the most important consideration when you get a flat tire, especially if it’s a highway blowout. Stay calm and aware of traffic as you pull over to a safe location.
- Pull Over to the Side of the Road: First, find a level, stable surface that’s away from car traffic. Turn on your hazard lights.
- Set the Parking Brake: Engage your parking brake and put your vehicle in Park.
- Wheel Wedges: If you have wheel wedges, place them behind the wheels on the opposite side of the flat tire.
Changing the Tire
- Loosen Lug Nuts: Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire slightly.
- Position the Jack: Place the jack under a solid metal part of your SUV’s frame near the wheel.
- Raise the Vehicle: Carefully raise the vehicle until the flat tire is off the ground about six inches.
- Remove Lug Nuts and Tire: Completely remove the lug nuts and take the tire off; keep the lug nuts close by and make sure not to lose them.
- Mount Your Spare: Place the spare tire over the wheel hub and tighten the lug nuts by hand.
- Lower the Vehicle: Lower the jack slowly until the spare touches the ground.
- Tighten Lug Nuts: Use the wrench to fully tighten the lug nuts — but not too terribly tight.
